Youth Services

The Project Ready College Access Program is a National Urban League initiative that “provides a comprehensive research based approach to preparing young people (and families) for the challenges and promise of higher education.” Students and their families are asked to commit to the program until after high school graduation, generally three to four years.
Participants work through the Project Ready College Access Curriculum to enhance their skills as they prepare for post-secondary education. The curriculum aids students’ Academic Development (Math and Reading), Social Development, and Cultural and Global Awareness through a variety of classes, workshops, college tours, service learning, special projects and events such as the NULITES/Project Ready Case Competition. Four Urban League of Middle Tennessee Project Ready participants will attend the NULITES Youth Summit and Case Competition in Chicago, IL, July 29 – August 1, 2009.
The Urban League of Middle Tennessee’s Project Ready College Access Program is unique in that it started with summer camps on university campuses. The Lipscomb University site opened on June 1, 2009 followed by the opening of the Fisk University Site, June 8, 2009. In addition, some Project Ready 10th grade students who have successfully passed Algebra were invited to attend the Tennessee State University Summer Math Academy from July 12 – 25, 2009 where they will reside in the dormitory. During the fall/winter and spring high school seasons, Project Ready will be implemented as a series of out of school activities and Saturday academies hosted by our university partners.
Added to the curriculum, special workshops, field trips, and college tours, are opportunities for participants at our university sites to interact with one another. After several weeks of work with the curriculum and participating in workshops, students from the Fisk University and Lipscomb University camps came together on July 2, 2009 for a fun-filled day at Wave Country.
Project Ready is supported by a grant from State Farm.
