Doing the Right Thing

The National Urban League designates each September as Achievement Month and to mark the occasion many of more than 100 Urban League affiliates, African American churches, fraternities and sororities, and professional and civic organizations plan special events including “Doing the Right Thing Day” celebrations. The Urban League of Middle Tennessee joins other Urban League affiliates across the country in celebrating the achievements of our young people. Through public celebrations and recognition and by encouraging unlimited support from adults, our youth learn to view academic achievement as important for their success. “Celebrating the achievements of our young people is a key element in making them believe that achievement matters,” National Urban League president and CEO Marc H. Morial said.
Traditionally, the Urban League of Middle Tennessee has sponsored awards ceremonies honoring students, parents/guardians, and school administrators from Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. Students receive medals, gifts, and special keepsake certificates to commemorate the event. A reception is held for the honorees, their families and other supporters after each celebration.
Our 2008 Doing the Right Thing Celebration was funded by a grant from Comcast. Doing the Right Thing for 2009 is funded by a grant from the Community Foundation.
