SAVE America Act

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act is proposed federal legislation that could significantly change how eligible voters register and participate in elections.

While positioned as a measure to protect election integrity, this legislation may introduce new requirements that create barriers for many Americans, particularly those already navigating systemic challenges.

INSIDE THE SAVE AMERICA ACT

Understanding the legislation, its potential impact, and why civic engagement matters.

01 Overview

What is the SAVE America Act?

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act is proposed federal legislation that would require individuals to provide in-person proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, in order to register to vote.

While intended to address concerns around non-citizen voting, there is no evidence of widespread occurrence of this issue.

02 Why This Matters

A strong democracy depends on access, participation, and representation.

At its core, this legislation introduces additional steps that could make the voting process more difficult for eligible citizens. When barriers are introduced, communities lose their ability to fully engage and advocate for their needs.

A strong democracy depends on:

ACCESS

PARTICIPATION

REPRESENTATION

Who Is Impacted

03 Who Could Be Impacted

Real-life challenges, everyday Tennesseans.

The SAVE Act may disproportionately affect individuals facing practical documentation, transportation, or access challenges.

Married individuals whose names have changed

Seniors with outdated documentation

College students living away from home

Individuals without easy access to required documents

Rural and transit-limited communities

Civic Engagement

04 What Could Change

Potential changes to voter registration access.

In-person registration only

Could require eligible voters to complete more steps in person.

Reduce mail/online options
Could limit or eliminate more accessible registration methods.

More steps for updates

Name and address updates may become more complicated.

These changes could significantly alter how many people access the voting process.

05 Civic Engagement

Real-life challenges, everyday Tennesseans.

Civic engagement is a cornerstone of a just and equitable society.

When individuals are unable to participate in elections, it impacts more than representation, it affects access to:

  • Housing

  • Education

  • Healthcare

  • Workforce opportunities

The ability to vote is directly connected to the ability to build a self-reliant, empowered future.

06 Our Position

ULMT supports equitable access to the democratic process.

“We believe that protecting election integrity and ensuring voter access must go hand in hand.”

The SAVE America Act, as proposed, risks creating barriers for the very communities we are committed to serving.
